Meaning and contents of Environment
The word environment comes from the french word ‘Environ’, which means encircle. Environment is a very broad concept and involves everything that affects on organism during its lifetime. So, environment can simply be defined as someone’s surroundings.
Contens- It involves everything around the organism i.e. abiotic (nonliving) and biotic (living) environment.
Abiotic environment consist of soil, water and air
Biotic environment includes all other organisms with which the organism comes into regular contacts.
Environment can be defined in many ways, Some of its commonly used definitions are:-
- Environment is a perfection of all social, biological, physical and chemical individually and collectively that compose the nature and man – made surroundings.
- It refers to sum total of conditions that surround man at a given point in space and time.
- It is the representative of physical elements of the earth in which man is an important factor influencing his environment.

In general, The environment can be described as the physical surroundings and conditions affecting the lives of people and animals.
In the human context, the environment is the sum of all the socio-economic, biological, physical or chemical factors that make up the surroundings man, who is both the creator and the molder of his own environment.
According to Goudie
“Environment is the representative of physical components of the earth, wherein man is the important factor influencing his environment.”
According Dr. T.N. Khoshoo
Environment means “the sum total of all conditions and influences that affect the development and life of all organisms.”
According to the United States Council on environmental quality Lays down that “man’s total environmental system includes not only the biosphere but also his interactions with his natural and man made surroundings.”
As per Section 2a of the Indian Environment protection Act, 1986 the term “environment includes water, air and land, and the interrelationship which exist among and between water, air and land and human beings, other living creatures plants micro-organisms and property.” According C-C Park states “Environment refers to the sum total of conditions which surround man at a given point in space and time.”
As per the Encyclopaedia Britannica “The environment means the entire range of external influence acting on an organism both the physical and biological and other organisms i.e. forces of nature surroundings an individual.”
